# Zwarte populier

## Populus nigra

Zwarte populier (Populus nigra) is een inheemse loofvallende boom die 20-30 meter hoog wordt met een brede, onregelmatige kroon en grove, donkere schors. Deze snelgroeiende boom heeft driehoekige bladeren die glanzend groen zijn en geel kleuren in de herfst. Bloeit vroeg in het voorjaar met hangende katjes voordat de bladeren verschijnen. Mannelijke en vrouwelijke bloemen staan op verschillende bomen.

De boom groeit zeer snel maar heeft een relatief korte levensduur van 80-120 jaar. Heeft oppervlakkige wortels en kan windschade veroorzaken. Groeit van nature langs rivieren en in vochtige gebieden. Belangrijk voor biodiversiteit en ondersteunt veel insecten- en vogelsoorten. Wordt vaak verward met snelgroeiende hybride populieren. Zwarte populier is geschikt voor grote ruimtes en natuurlijke beplanting.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

De zwarte populier stelt weinig eisen aan de bodem. Hij heeft een eerder vochtige standplaats nodig en staat graag in de volle zon.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

Populus nigra 'Italica', de Italiaanse populier, is een mannelijke, zuilvormige cultivar die bekroond werd met een Award of Garden Merit (RHS). Hij is uitstekend geschikt als windbreker of groenscherm rond grote gebouwen.

### Onderhoud

Plant zwarte populier op vochtige plek in volle zon. Heeft veel ruimte nodig voor groei en wortels.

Snoei voorzichtig - boom heeft brosse takken. Verwijder dode takken voor veiligheid.

Water jonge bomen. Volwassen bomen zijn zelfvoorzienend maar hebben veel water nodig.

Zwarte populier is een van onze oorspronkelijke inheemse bomen en vormde natuurlijke ooibossen langs rivieren.

Door habitatverlies is de echte zwarte populier zeldzaam geworden, vaak vervangen door hybride cultivars.
