Deze boom heeft ronde tot ovale bladeren met getande rand en bloeit vroeg in het voorjaar met hangende gele katjes. Na bloei vormen zich kleine kegeltjes die lang aan de boom blijven. De boom heeft de bijzondere eigenschap dat hij stikstof kan binden via wortelknolletjes, waardoor hij de grond verbetert. Groeit snel en verdraagt zelfs tijdelijke overstroming. Hout werd traditioneel gebruikt voor paalwerk omdat het onder water niet rot. Zeer winterhard en belangrijk voor oeverbevestiging en natuurlijke waterretentie. Zwarte els is perfect voor natte plekken en natuurlijke waterbeheersing. Toch dient de bodem luchtig en goed doorlaatbaar te zijn. De boom staat graag op een zonnige plaats. ### Cultivars (Soorten) 'Imperialis', de keizerlijke els, groeit elegant en trager en heeft opvallend smalle, ingesneden blad met gave randen dat lijkt op dat van de Japanse esdoorn. ### Onderhoud Plant zwarte els in volle zon in vochtige tot natte grond. Ideaal voor waterretentiegebieden. Snoei minimaal - alleen dode takken verwijderen. Boom heeft natuurlijke vorm. Water niet nodig - groeit juist in natste plekken. Zeer onderhoudsarm en zelfvoorzienend. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Zwarte els was essentieel voor Nederlandse landschapsvorming - het hout werd gebruikt voor funderingen van steden op water.
