Deze boom wordt 4-6 meter hoog en breed, met ovale, donkergroene bladeren en crèmewitte, geurende bloemen in grote pluimen die augustus-september verschijnen, gevolgd door rode kelkblaadjes die tot ver in de herfst decoratief blijven. De schors is bijzonder sierlijk: afbladderende, papierachtige lagen tonen een warme, geelbruine onderlaag die vooral in de winter opvalt. Hij heeft regelmatig water nodig en kan zowel in de volle zon als halfschaduw staan. De naam 'zevenzonenboom' verwijst naar de zeven zonen van een Chinese keizer die deze boom als eerste cultiveerde.
