Deze boom wordt 8-15 meter hoog en heeft zeer grote, hartvormige bladeren tot 25 cm met kleine, geurende bloemen in hangende trossen die mei-juni verschijnen, gevolgd door rode bessen op vrouwelijke bomen. De bladeren zijn opvallend groot en hartvormig met lange steel. Plant is tweehuizig met aparte mannelijke en vrouwelijke bomen. Alleen vrouwelijke bomen produceren de decoratieve rode bessen die in hangende trossen groeien en geliefd zijn bij vogels. Wonderboom is waardevol voor grote landschappen waar bijzondere bomen en wildlife-ondersteuning centraal staan.
