Wijfjesvaren (Athyrium filix-femina) is een inheemse varen met delicaat verdeelde bladeren die uitstekend geschikt is voor schaduwtuinen waar natuurlijke varens en fijne texturen gewaardeerd worden. Deze varen wordt 60-120 cm hoog en heeft dubbel geveerde wedels met zeer fijne verdeling die een luchtige, delicate textuur geven. De wedels zijn lichtgroen en zeer fijn verdeeld met delicate structuur. Plant groeit vanuit ondergrondse wortelstok en vormt geleidelijk kolonies. Sterft terug in winter en komt elk voorjaar weer op vanuit spiraalvormige 'bisschopsstaven'. Ze kan op alle grondsoorten leven, maar heeft wel nood aan een frisse bodem. ### Onderhoud Plant wijfjesvaren in schaduw tot halfschaduw in vochtige, humusrijke grond. Plant houdt van bosomstandigheden. Verwijder oude wedels in maart voor nieuwe groei. Water regelmatig tijdens droge periodes. Mulch met bladcompost.
