# Toorts

## Verbascum sp.

Toorts (Kniphofia uvaria) is een dramatische vaste plant met lange, smalle bladeren en opvallende oranje-rode bloemen in fakkelachtige aren die een tropische uitstraling geven aan borders. Deze plant wordt 80-150 cm hoog en heeft lijnvormige bladeren met dichte aren van buisvormige bloemen die juni-september verschijnen in intense oranje-rode kleuren.

De bloemen staan in dichte, cilindrische aren die lijken op brandende fakkels. Bloemen openen van onder naar boven en veranderen vaak van kleur tijdens bloei van rood naar geel. Plant groeit vanuit vlezige wortels en vormt geleidelijk uitbreidende pollen. Toorts is perfect voor tuinen waar dramatische kleuraccenten en exotische effecten centraal staan.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Toorts verkiest een kalkrijke, eerder droge grond en een plaats in de volle zon.

### Onderhoud

Plant toorts in volle zon in goed doorlatende grond. Plant verdraagt geen winterse wateroverlast.

Mulch dik in winter en bind bladeren samen voor bescherming. Knip oude bloemstengels weg na bloei.

Water regelmatig tijdens groei maar stop in herfst. Verdeel pollen voorzichtig - verstoor wortels minimaal.

Kniphofia uvaria komt uit Zuid-Afrika en werd vernoemd naar Johann Hieronymus Kniphof, Duitse botanicus.
