# Taxus - Venijnboom

## Taxus baccata

Taxus-Venijnboom (Taxus baccata) is een wintergroene naaldboom met donkergroene naalden en rode bessen die uitstekend geschikt is voor formele hagen en topiary-werk, maar zeer giftig is voor mensen en dieren. Deze boom wordt 10-20 meter hoog en heeft kleine, platte naalden met rode, kelkvormige vruchten die herfst-winter verschijnen.

De naalden zijn donkergroen en plat met lichtere onderkant. Plant is tweehuizig met mannelijke en vrouwelijke bomen. Alleen vrouwelijke bomen produceren de karakteristieke rode bessen. Alle delen behalve het rode bessenvlees zijn zeer giftig. Taxus is essentieel voor formele tuinen waar wintergroene structuur en topiary-mogelijkheden centraal staan.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Taxus doet het goed zowel in de volle zon als in volle schaduw. Hij is niet bodemspecifiek, maar de bodem dient goed doorlatend te zijn, hij houdt niet van natte voeten. Plantdichtheid als haag: 3 per lopende meter

### Onderhoud

Plant taxus in halfschaduw tot zon in goed doorlatende grond. Plant verdraagt verschillende omstandigheden.

Snoei 2 keer per jaar voor hagen of naar gewenste vorm voor topiary. Verbrand snoeimaterial veilig.

Water eerste jaren regelmatig. Houd strikt weg van kinderen, huisdieren en veekering. Waarschuw bezoekers.

Taxus baccata kan meer dan 2000 jaar oud worden en werd heilig gehouden door Kelten en Germanen.

Plant symboliseert eeuwigheid en dood - vandaar gebruik op kerkhoven ondanks extreme giftigheid.
