# Specerijstruik

## Calycanthus floridus

Specerijstruik (Calycanthus floridus) is een Noord-Amerikaanse struik met aromatische bladeren en donkerrode bloemen die een intense kruidengeur verspreiden en uitstekend geschikt is voor geurtuinen. Deze struik wordt 150-250 cm hoog en heeft ovale, tegenoverstaande bladeren met merkwaardige bloemen die bestaan uit vele kronbladen in donkerrood tot bruin en een sterke, fruitige geur verspreiden.

De bloemen hebben geen echte bloemblaadjes, maar vele kronbladen die geleidelijk overgaan van kelk- naar kroonbladeren. Alle delen van de plant zijn aromatisch, vooral bij wrijving. Bloemen verschijnen mei-juli en worden gevolgd door urnsgewijze vruchten met grote zaden. Specerijstruik is perfect voor geurtuinen waar aromatische planten en historische Amerikaanse flora centraal staan.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

De specerijstruik heeft voldoende zon nodig, maar kan ook leven in halfschaduw. De bodem dient voedselrijk, vochthoudend en neutraal tot licht zuur te zijn. Hij heeft bij voorkeur een zandgrond.

### Onderhoud

Plant specerijstruik in halfschaduw tot zon in vochtige, humusrijke grond. Plant houdt van koele, vochtige omstandigheden.

Snoei minimaal - alleen vormcorrecties na bloei. Plant heeft natuurlijke elegante vorm.

Water regelmatig tijdens droge periodes. Mulch rond plant voor vocht-behoud en wortelprotectie.

Calycanthus floridus werd door Amerikaanse kolonisten 'Carolina allspice' genoemd vanwege de kruidige geur.

Plant werd historisch gebruikt voor parfum en potpourri en symboliseert de rijkdom van Noord-Amerikaanse flora.
