Deze struik wordt 100-150 cm hoog en heeft donkergroene, leerachtige bladeren met clusters van kleine, geurende bloemen in wit of roze die maart-mei verschijnen. Voor bessen zijn zowel mannelijke als vrouwelijke planten nodig. Mannelijke planten hebben grotere bloemen met meer geur, vrouwelijke produceren rode bessen die tot in winter aanhouden. Plant heeft compacte, bolvormige groeiwijze en is zeer tolerant voor luchtvervuiling. Skimmia is essentieel voor schaduwtuinen waar wintergroene structuur en stedelijke tolerantie gewenst zijn. De bodem dient goed doorlaatbaar en zuur te zijn. Plantdichtheid: 1 - 3 per m² ### Cultivars (Soorten) Fragrans, met aromatisch blad tot 10 cm; Nymans, met smaller, wat langer blad; Rubella, met opvallende rode knoppen zijn de mooist; Skimmia x confusa 'Kew Green' is een prachtige potplant met opvallende groengele bloemen. ### Onderhoud Plant skimmia in halfschaduw tot schaduw in humusrijke, licht zure grond. Plant verdraagt diepe schaduw goed. Minimale snoei nodig - alleen vormcorrecties na bloei. Plant behoudt natuurlijke compacte vorm. Water tijdens droge periodes. Mulch met bladcompost. Plant heeft lage onderhoudsbehoefte. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Skimmia japonica komt uit Japan en werd in Victoriaanse tijd geïntroduceerd als ideale stadstuin-struik.
