# Schijnels

## Clethra alnifolia

Schijnels (Celtis occidentalis) is een middelgrote loofvallende boom die 12-18 meter hoog wordt met een brede, ronde kroon en kleine, ovale bladeren met gezaagde rand. Deze Noord-Amerikaanse boom heeft grijze schors met karakteristieke wratten en bloeit onopvallend in het voorjaar. Na de bloei verschijnen kleine oranje tot rode bessen die geliefd zijn bij vogels.

De boom is zeer droogtetolerant en windbestendig, ideaal voor moeilijke stedelijke omstandigheden. Groeit matig snel en wordt zeer oud. Bladeren kleuren geel in de herfst. Zeer winterhard en verdraagt luchtvervuiling goed. De bessen blijven lang aan de boom en voeden vogels in de winter. Schijnels is perfect voor straatbeplanting en stedelijke tuinen.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

De schijnels heeft enkele uren direct zonlicht nodig en staat best niet in de schaduw. Plant schijnels in een zandgrond of veengrond.

### Onderhoud

Plant schijnels op zonnige plek in doorlatende grond. Zeer tolerant voor arme en droge omstandigheden.

Snoei minimaal, alleen vormgeving en dode takken verwijderen in winter. Natuurlijke vorm is aantrekkelijk.

Water alleen eerste jaar na planting. Daarna zelfvoorzienend. Zeer onderhoudsarm en klimaatbestendig.

### Dit wist je nog niet:

Schijnels werd geïntroduceerd als alternatief voor traditionele stadsbomen die klimaatverandering minder goed verdragen.
