Deze Japanse boom heeft ovale bladeren die spectaculair oranje-rood kleuren in de herfst en decoratieve schors die in platen afbladdert en mozaïekpatronen toont. De boom bloeit laat in de zomer met 5-petalige witte bloemen met gele meeldraden. Groeit zeer langzaam, maar wordt uiteindelijk indrukwekkend. De schors is het hele jaar decoratief door de afbladderende platen in verschillende tinten. Heeft zure grond nodig en beschutting tegen felle zon. Schijncamellia is perfect als specimen boom voor speciale plekken. Hij staat best in de halfschaduw, waarbij de felle namiddagzon vermeden wordt. Hij kan niet tegen verharding en vorst en heeft bescherming nodig tijdens de winter. ### Onderhoud Plant schijncamellia in halfschaduw in zure, vochtige, humusrijke grond. Beschut tegen koude wind. Snoei minimaal, alleen dode takken verwijderen. Laat natuurlijke vorm ontwikkelen. Water regelmatig met zacht water. Mulch met zure materialen zoals naaldhoutschors. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Schijncamellia komt uit Japan en Korea en werd geïntroduceerd vanwege de unieke combinatie van zomerbloei en decoratieve schors.
