# Schietwilg - Knotwilg

## Salix alba

Schietwilg (Salix alba) is een snelgroeiende loofvallende boom die 15-25 meter hoog kan worden met karakteristieke zilvergrijze bladeren en flexibele takken. Deze inheemse wilg groeit bij voorkeur in vochtige grond en wordt traditioneel geknot voor de productie van takhout. Bloeit vroeg in het voorjaar met gele katjes voordat de bladeren verschijnen.

De boom heeft een brede kroon en groeit zeer snel, tot 1-2 meter per jaar. Jonge takken zijn flexibel en werden gebruikt voor vlechtwerk. Knotten houdt de boom compact en produceert jaarlijks nieuwe scheuten. Zeer winterhard en verdraagt ook natte omstandigheden uitstekend. Schietwilg is perfect voor grote tuinen en waterpartijen.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

​Ideaal voor in drassiger gebied, langs grachten en sloten. Is goed bestand tegen tijdelijke hoge waterstand. Verdraagt zeer goed (zee)wind en verharding.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

Er bestaan heel wat variëteiten in ons landschap. Salix alba var. sericea heeft lange, zilverachtige bladeren.

### Onderhoud

Plant schietwilg op vochtige plek in volle zon. Verdraagt ook natte grond en overstromingen.

Knot om de 3-5 jaar in winter voor traditioneel beheer. Anders minimaal snoeien, alleen dode takken.

Water jonge bomen, volwassen exemplaren zijn zelfvoorzienend. Zeer onderhoudsarm en snel groeiend.

Schietwilg werd eeuwenlang geknot voor de productie van buigzame takken voor manden, hekken en andere gebruiksvoorwerpen.

In moderne landschapsarchitectuur wordt knotten toegepast voor karakteristieke vormen en ecologische waarde.
