# Rotsvaren

## Asplenium sp.

Rotsvaren (Dryopteris filix-mas) is een robuuste inheemse varen met grote, geveerde bladeren die uitstekend gedijt in schaduw en een klassieke varenlook biedt voor natuurlijke tuinen. Deze vaste varen wordt 60-120 cm hoog en heeft dubbel geveerde, lancetvormige bladeren die uit een centrale rozet groeien en blijven groen tot de winter.

De bladeren zijn donkergroen en hebben karakteristieke bruine sporenhoopjes (sori) aan de onderkant waar sporen geproduceerd worden. Plant vormt langzaam uitbreidende kolonies en is zeer winterhard. Jonge bladeren rollen zich af als kroziers in voorjaar. Rotsvaren is essentieel voor schaduwtuinen waar natuurlijke, inheemse beplanting centraal staat.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Onderhoud

Plant rotsvaren in halfschaduw tot schaduw in vochtige, humusrijke grond. Verdraagt droge schaduw eens gevestigd.

Verwijder oude bladeren in voorjaar voordat nieuwe uitkomen. Plant heeft minimaal onderhoud nodig.

Water eerste jaar regelmatig. Mulch met bladcompost. Plant zorgt voor zichzelf eens gevestigd.

### Dit wist je nog niet:

Dryopteris filix-mas werd historisch 'mannetjesvaren' genoemd en gebruikt tegen wormen - vandaar naam 'filix-mas'.

Plant is symbool van oerkracht en natuurlijkheid en speelt belangrijke rol in natuurlijke ecosystemen.
