# Rotsheide

## Pieris japonica

Rotsheide (Erica carnea) is een winterbloeiende heide met kleine, klokjesvormige bloemen in wit, roze of rood die de donkerste maanden van het jaar opvrolijkt en uitstekende bodembedekking biedt. Deze lage struik wordt 15-25 cm hoog en verspreidt zich tot 60 cm breed met naaldachtige bladeren en bloemen die december-april verschijnen wanneer weinig andere planten bloeien.

De bloemen hangen in kleine clusters langs de takken en zijn zeer geliefd bij vroege bijen en andere bestuivers die op zoek zijn naar winternectar. Plant heeft naaldvormige, wintergroene bladeren die vaak verkleuren in winter. Vele cultivars beschikbaar in verschillende bloemkleuren en bloeitijden. Rotsheide is essentieel voor wintertuinen waar vroege bloei en groenblijvende bodembedekking gewaardeerd worden.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

​Plant in niet te droge, goed gedraineerde, zure grond uit de noordoostenwind en uit de hete middagzon. Plantdichtheid: 1 per m²

### Cultivars (Soorten)

Firecrest (2,5 m), Flaming Silver (met wit randje rond het blad) en Forest Flame (2,5 m) zijn maar enkele van de tientallen excellente tuinvarianten.

### Onderhoud

Plant rotsheide in volle zon tot lichte schaduw in goed doorlatende grond. Verdraagt kalkhoudende grond goed.

Snoei direct na bloei door bloeiende takken licht terug te knippen. Bevordert compacte groei.

Water tijdens eerste jaar en extreme droogte. Mulch licht rond planten. Plant is zeer winterhard.

### Dit wist je nog niet:

Erica carnea groeit wild in Alpen en is aangepast aan koude winters en kalkrijke berggrond.

Plant is cruciaal voor vroege bijen die uit winterslaap ontwaken en zoeken naar eerste nectarbronnen.
