Deze Japanse soort heeft jonge bladeren met zilveren beharing die geleidelijk verdwijnt. De bloemen openen roze en verbleken naar wit. De struik heeft een natuurlijke bolvormige groei en is zeer winterhard. Jonge uitlopers hebben een karakteristieke zilveren glans door de beharing. Groeit langzaam, maar wordt een perfecte compacte struik. Zeer geschikt voor kleine tuinen en containers. Vele cultivars en hybriden zijn hiervan afgeleid. Rhododendron yakushimanum is perfect voor kleine tuinen en rotstuinen. Beschut tegen koude wind. Water regelmatig met zacht water, vooral in droge periodes. Mulch met zure materialen zoals naaldhoutschors. Verwijder uitgebloeide bloemen voorzichtig zonder knoppen te beschadigen. Snoei niet nodig, natuurlijke vorm is perfect. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Yakushimanum komt van het Japanse eiland Yakushima en werd in de 20e eeuw geïntroduceerd vanwege zijn compacte vorm.
