# Rode meidoorn

## Crataegus laevigata 'Paul's Scarlet'

Rode meidoorn (Crataegus laevigata 'Paul's Scarlet') is een kleine loofvallende boom of grote struik die 4-6 meter hoog wordt met dubbele, felrode bloemen in mei. Deze cultivar van de gewone meidoorn heeft donkergroene, ingesneden bladeren en bloeit rijkelijk met geurende bloemen die bijen en andere insecten aantrekken. Na bloei verschijnen rode vruchten.

De boom heeft een onregelmatige, brede kroon en is zeer winterhard. Bloeit op eenjarig hout dus voorzichtig snoeien. Verdraagt stedelijke omstandigheden goed en is resistentie tegen de meeste ziekten. De takken hebben kleine doorns. Groeit matig snel en is zeer onderhoudsarm. Rode meidoorn is perfect voor kleine tuinen en straatbeplanting.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Rode meidoorn staat graag op een plaats in de halfschaduw of volle zon. Hij stelt bijna geen bodemeisen en doet het, in tegenstelling tot de andere meidoornen, zelfs goed op een moerasgrond. Zorg ervoor dat de bodem neutraal, licht zuur is. Hij verdraagt geen kalkrijke bodem.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

Crataegus lavalleei 'Aurora' verdraagt het stedelijk klimaat goed en is weinig gevoelig voor luchtverontreiniging; Crataegus monogyna, eenstijlige meidoorn, bloeit met kleine, witte, geurende bloemetjes en heeft één stijl.

### Onderhoud

Plant rode meidoorn op zonnige tot licht beschaduwde plek in doorlatende grond. Zeer tolerant voor verschillende omstandigheden.

Snoei direct na bloei voor vormgeving. Verwijder waterloten en kruisende takken. Draag handschoenen vanwege doorns.

Water alleen tijdens extreme droogte. Zeer onderhoudsarm eens gevestigd. Geef jaarlijks compost voor optimale bloei.

Rode meidoorn 'Paul's Scarlet' werd in de 19e eeuw geselecteerd en is een van de meest populaire cultivars vanwege de felrode bloei.

De boom wordt geassocieerd met lente en vernieuwing, traditioneel gebruikt in dorpspleinen en voor straatbeplanting.
