# Pruimelaar

## Prunus domestica

Pruimelaar (Prunus domestica) is een fruitboom met witte bloemen in voorjaar en zoete pruimen in verschillende kleuren die uitstekend zijn voor verse consumptie en verwerking tot jam en gebak. Deze boom wordt 4-8 meter hoog en produceert bloemen voor bladuitloop, gevolgd door ronde tot ovale vruchten in blauw, paars, geel of groen.

De bloemen verschijnen maart-april in clusters langs de takken en zijn wit tot licht roze. Vruchten rijpen juli-september afhankelijk van ras en hebben zoet, sappig vruchtvlees rond een harde pit. Boom heeft vaak een brede, uitwaaierende kroon. Pruimelaar is essentieel voor eetbare tuinen waar traditionele fruitsoorten en zelfvoorzienendheid gewenst zijn.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Pruimelaar houdt van een neutrale tot licht kalkrijke, goed doorlaatbare bodem en staat graag in de volle zon. Plant een pruimelaar niet in de buurt van een openbaar terras of kinderspeelplaats: de wespen zijn dol op de pruimen. Een pruimelaar groeit vaak wat warrig en scheef: plant hem nooit als solitair in een blikveld.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

De lekkerste en gezondste rassen zijn 'Anna Späth', 'Belle de Thuin', 'Mirabelle' en 'Reine Claude Crottée'.

### Onderhoud

Plant pruimelaar in volle zon in vochtige, goed doorlatende grond. Boom groeit het best in beschutte locatie.

Snoei in winter voor open kroonstructuur. Dun vruchten in juni bij overmatige zetting voor grotere pruimen.

Water regelmatig tijdens vruchtontwikkeling. Ondersteun zwaar beladen takken. Oogst rijpe vruchten regelmatig.

Pruimen waren belangrijke voedselbron in Middeleeuwen en worden nog steeds wereldwijd gekweekt voor consumptie.
