# Prairielelie

## Camassia sp.

Prairielelie (Camassia) is een Noord-Amerikaanse bolplant met sterke aren van blauwe, paarse of witte bloemen die uitstekend naturaliseert in vochtige weilanden en een belangrijke nectarbron is voor bijen. Deze plant wordt 60-120 cm hoog en heeft smalle bladeren met bloemen in dichte aren die mei-juni verschijnen.

De bloemen hebben zes bloemblaadjes en staan dicht opeen in rechtopstaande aren boven het grasachtige bladerwerk. Plant groeit vanuit grote bollen en vermenigvuldigt zich langzaam via dochterbolletjes. Historisch waren bollen belangrijke voedselbron voor inheemse Amerikaanse volken. Prairielelie is essentieel voor natuurlijke tuinen waar prairie-effecten en vroege zomerbloei gewenst zijn.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

De prairielelie leeft het liefst in een grasland of op lage vochtige plaatsen. De plant kan op alle grondsoorten overleven en heeft veel zon nodig. De bodem moet steeds fris en vochtig zijn.

### Onderhoud

Plant prairielelie in herfst in volle zon tot lichte schaduw in vochtige grond. Bollen 15-20 cm diep planten.

Laat bladeren volledig afsterven na bloei om bollen te voeden. Plant naturaliseert langzaam maar gestaag.

Water tijdens droge voorjaars- en zomerperiodes. Mulch licht in winter. Verstoor zo min mogelijk.

### Dit wist je nog niet:

Camassia bollen waren zo belangrijk voor inheemse volken dat conflicten uitbraken over oogstgebieden. Plant heet 'Indian hyacinth'.

Bollen bevatten inuline en werden als 'prairie-aardappels' gebruikt. Moderne ecologische tuinen herontdekken deze plant.
