Deze plant wordt 100-250 cm hoog en heeft een rozet van zilvergrijs behaarde bladeren waaruit een hoge bloemstengel oprijst met talloze kleine gele bloemen. De bloemen verschijnen juni-september in dichte aren en openen van onder naar boven. Plant groeit het eerste jaar als bladrozet en bloeit het tweede jaar spectaculair voordat hij sterft. Zaait zich gemakkelijk uit op open grond en kan kolonie vormen. Prachtkaars is essentieel voor prairie-tuinen waar dramatische verticale accenten en wilde schoonheid centraal staan. Een te natte bodem kan ervoor zorgen dat hij matig winterhard wordt. Prachtkaars staat mooi in een gemengde plantenborder maar ook als potplant op het terras. ### Onderhoud Plant prachtkaars in volle zon in goed doorlatende, schrale grond. Plant verdraagt droogte en arme omstandigheden uitstekend. Laat plant zichzelf uitzaaien voor continue aanwezigheid. Ondersteun hoge stengels tegen wind indien nodig. Water alleen bij extreme droogte eerste jaar. Geen bemesting nodig - plant groeit het best in arme grond. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Verbascum werd historisch gebruikt als fakkel (soort met wollige bladeren brandt goed) en als geneesmiddel voor hoest. Plant symboliseert moed en bescherming.
