# Portugese laurierkers

## Prunus lusitanica

Portugese laurierkers (Prunus lusitanica) is een wintergroene struik met donkergroene, glanzende bladeren en witte bloemen in rechtopstaande aren die gevolgd worden door kleine zwarte kersen. Deze plant wordt 3-6 meter hoog en heeft kleinere bladeren dan gewone laurierkers met geurende bloemen die mei-juni verschijnen.

De bladeren zijn ovaal en hebben een karakteristieke rode bladsteel. Bloemen verschijnen in dichte, rechtopstaande aren en zijn zeer geurig. Na bloei ontwikkelen zich kleine, donkere kersen die geliefd zijn bij vogels. Plant groeit langzamer dan gewone laurierkers. Portugese laurierkers is essentieel voor formele hagen waar elegantere bladstructuur en geurende bloei gewenst zijn.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Portugese laurierkers houdt van een humusrijke, goed doorlatende, vochtige bodem. Als haag zet je 1 plant per lopende meter.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

‘Variegata’ groeit minder hard, met lichtgroen blad met een roomwitte tot gele rand omheen; 'Myrtifolia' (syn. 'Angustifolia') groeit langzamer en wordt niet hoger dan 3 meter.

### Onderhoud

Plant Portugese laurierkers in halfschaduw tot zon in goed doorlatende grond. Bescherm tegen koude winden.

Snoei 2 keer per jaar voor haagvorming. Plant verdraagt topiary-snoei uitstekend voor formele vormen.

Water regelmatig eerste jaren. Bescherm tegen strenge vorst met windschermen. Bemest licht in voorjaar.
