De kleine, ovale bladeren zijn groengrijs en de struik bloeit in de zomer met kleine roze-witte bloempjes. Na de bloei ontwikkelen zich de karakteristieke parelwitte bessen die lang aan de takken blijven hangen. De bessen zijn zeer decoratief voor bloemstukken en winterarrangementen, maar giftig voor mensen. Vogels zijn er wel dol op. De struik is zeer winterhard en onderhoudsarm, groeit in bijna alle omstandigheden en kan zelfs tegen vervuiling. Vormt uitlopers en kan zich goed uitbreiden. Parelbes is perfect voor natuurlijke hagen en vogeltuinen. Niet in de volle middagzon, noch op droge plekken. In de winter zet je parelbes op een beschutte plek, uit de wind. ### Cultivars (Soorten) Aan de vrouwelijke of tweeslachtige planten komen de rode (of, bij de cultivars: roze en witte) bessen die de hele winter aan de plant blijven. Bell's Seedling is de enige tweeslachtige, met bloemen en bessen. Heeft kleine witte bloempjes en donkerrode bessen tot 1 cm. Andere excellente cultivars zijn Pink pearl, Sea Shell, Crimsonia, Mulberry Wine en Wintertime. Gaultheria procumbens of bergthee is een excellente bloembakplant uit dezelfde familie (heidefamilie). ### Onderhoud Plant parelbes op zonnige tot schaduwrijke plek in vrijwel elke grondsoort. Zeer tolerant voor verschillende omstandigheden. Snoei in het voorjaar vóór nieuwe groei. Kan krachtig teruggesneden worden. Verwijder uitlopers voor compacte groei. Water alleen bij extreme droogte. Zeer onderhoudsarm eens gevestigd. Geef jaarlijks compost voor optimale besvorming. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Parelbes komt oorspronkelijk uit Noord-Amerika en werd geïntroduceerd als sierstruik vanwege de decoratieve winterbessen.
