# Olijfwilg

## Elaeagnus x ebbingei

Olijfwilg (Elaeagnus) is een robuuste struik met zilvergrijze bladeren en kleine, geurende bloemen die gevolgd worden door rode bessen en uitstekende windbestendigheid biedt. Deze veelzijdige struik wordt 2-4 meter hoog en heeft ovale bladeren met zilverkleurige onderkant die de plant een charakteristieke zilverglans geeft.

De kleine, tubusvormige bloemen verschijnen september-november en zijn zeer geurig maar onopvallend. Na bloei ontwikkelen zich rode, eetbare bessen die geliefd zijn bij vogels. Plant heeft doorns en groeit zeer krachtig, vooral in kustgebieden waar zout en wind worden verdragen. Olijfwilg is essentieel voor winderige locaties waar zilverkleurig bladerwerk en vogelvoeding gewenst zijn.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

De olijfwilg doet het goed op iedere grond en groeit ook prima onder bomen. Hij is heel goed bestand tegen (zee)wind en is daarom een ideale kustplant.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

De Elaeagnus x ebbingei 'Limelight' is een kleinere variant met een mooie bladkleur, die is namelijk groen met een geel hart.

### Onderhoud

Plant olijfwilg in volle zon in goed doorlatende grond. Plant verdraagt arme grond, zout en extreme wind.

Snoei regelmatig voor vorm en grootte-beheersing. Plant groeit zeer krachtig en kan overwoekeren.

Water alleen eerste jaar na aanplant. Daarna volledig zelfvoorzienend. Let op doorns bij snoeiwerk.

### Dit wist je nog niet:

Elaeagnus betekent 'olijfwilg' vanwege gelijkenis met beide planten. Soorten binden stikstof en verbeteren grond.

Plant wordt veel gebruikt in kustbebossing vanwege extreme wind- en zoutverdraagzaamheid.
