# Oleander

## Nerium oleander

Oleander (Nerium oleander) is een mediterrane wintergroene struik met leerachtige bladeren en kleurrijke, vijfbladige bloemen die de hele zomer door bloeien en perfect zijn voor kuiptuinen en mediterrane sfeer. Deze plant wordt 2-4 meter hoog en heeft smalle, donkergroene bladeren met bloemen in wit, roze, rood of geel die vaak geurend zijn.

De bloemen hebben vijf bloemblaadjes die overlappen en kunnen enkel of dubbel zijn. Plant bloeit onvermoeibaar van mei tot oktober bij warme omstandigheden. Alle delen van plant zijn zeer giftig maar bloemen trekken wel vlinders aan. Plant verdraagt zout en wind goed. Oleander is perfect voor mediterrane kuiptuinen waar exotische bloei en wintergroene structuur gewenst zijn.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Doet het goed op zowat elke bodem, ook op zand, maar verkiest leem of klei. Zand kan te droog uitvallen, in de zomer. Planten in pot groeien best in goede vochthoudende potgrond met wat klei, bijvoorbeeld potgrond voor mediterrane planten. Van te weinig water in een droge zomer wordt het blad vaalgroen tot geel.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

Er zijn meer dan 200 cultivars, voornamelijk verschillend in bloemkleur en - vorm. ‘Album’ is de bekendste witte; ‘Splendens’ een erg mooie roze, met dubbele bloemen en grijsgroen blad; ‘Variegatum’ heeft gepanacheerd blad, en dubbele roze bloemen.

### Onderhoud

Plant oleander in volle zon in goed doorlatende potgrond. Plant houdt van warmte en veel licht voor optimale bloei.

Water regelmatig maar laat grond tussen watergiften licht opdrogen. Bemest maandelijks tijdens groeiseizoen.

Overwinter binnen op lichte plek bij 5-10°C. Snoei in voorjaar voor vorm. Draag altijd handschoenen bij alle werkzaamheden.

Oleander groeit wild rond Middellandse Zee en is symbool van mediterrane tuinen. Plant kan meer dan 100 jaar oud worden.

Ondanks giftigheid wordt plant veel gebruikt omdat het zeer decoratief is en goed groeit in moeilijke omstandigheden.
