# Nieskruid

## Helleborus sp.

Nieskruid (Helleborus) is een winterbloeiende vaste plant met leerachtige, handvormige bladeren en elegante bloemen in wit, roze, paars of groen die verschijnen tijdens de donkerste maanden van het jaar. Deze wintergroene plant wordt 30-60 cm hoog en bloeit december-april met bloemen die maandenlang aanhouden en essentiële vroege nectar bieden.

De bloemen hebben vijf kelkbladen die lijken op bloemblaadjes en talrijke meeldraden. Na bloei ontwikkelen zich leerachtige zaaddozen. Plant heeft donkergroene, gevingerde bladeren die het hele jaar decoratief blijven. Alle delen van plant zijn giftig. Nieskruid is essentieel voor wintertuinen waar bloei tijdens donkere maanden en wintergroene structuur gewenst zijn.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Plant nieskruid op een schaduwrijke plaats, bv. als onderbeplanting van struiken en bomen of tegen een schaduwmuur. Zorg voor een frisse, humusrijke, kalkhoudende bodem. Plantdichtheid: 5 - 7 per m²

### Cultivars (Soorten)

De gezaaide planten zijn gemengd van kleur. Kleurvast zijn H. orientalis 'Early Purple' (paars) en 'White Lady' (wit). Helleborus orientalis x hybride, Oosters nieskruid, is tweekleurig en heeft wit met rode/roze geaderde strepen in de bloem; Helleborus foetidus, stinkend nieskruid, bloeit met geelgroene, grote tuilen komvormige, knikkende, 5 cm grote bloemen aan opstaande stengels. Met rozet van smalle, lange, donkergroene bladeren; H. foetidus 'Sopron' heeft een groenzilver blad en open bloeiwijze; H. foetidus 'Wester Fliske' bloeit met groene bloemen op rode stengels.

### Onderhoud

Plant nieskruid in halfschaduw tot schaduw in goed doorlatende, kalkrijke grond. Plant verdraagt geen wateroverlast.

Verstoor zo min mogelijk - plant heeft jaren nodig om zich te vestigen. Verwijder alleen dode bladeren.

Water tijdens extreme droogte. Mulch rond planten met bladcompost. Draag handschoenen bij alle werkzaamheden.

Helleborus werd historisch gebruikt als niespoeder en geneesmiddel ondanks giftigheid. Plant symboliseert hoop en vernieuwing.

Kerstrozen en lenterozen zijn belangrijkste tuinsoorten. Plant biedt essentiële vroege nectar aan overwinterende bijen.
