# Meelbes

## Sorbus aria

Meelbes (Amelanchier lamarckii) is een veelzijdige struik of kleine boom met spectaculaire witte bloei in voorjaar, eetbare bessen in zomer en prachtige herfstverkleuring die vier seizoenen interesse biedt. Deze plant wordt 3-6 meter hoog en heeft ovale bladeren die brons uitkomen, groen worden en in herfst oranje-rood verkleuren.

De witte bloemen verschijnen april-mei voordat bladeren volledig uit zijn en bedekken de plant in een wolk van bloesem. Donkerblauwe bessen rijpen juli-augustus en zijn zoet en sappig, geliefd bij vogels en geschikt voor menselijke consumptie. Plant heeft natuurlijk elegante vorm. Meelbes is essentieel voor tuinen waar eetbare vruchten gecombineerd worden met seizoensschoonheid.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Meelbes stelt weinig eisen aan de bodem, zorg enkel dat de standplaats niet te nat is.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

Lutescens, met roomwitte bloemen en oranje bessen en zilvergrijs lenteblad; Majestica met geel herfstblad; Sorbus thibetica 'John Mitchell' met bruine vruchten.

### Onderhoud

Plant meelbes in volle zon tot lichte schaduw in goed doorlatende grond. Plant groeit in verschillende grondsoorten.

Minimale snoei nodig - alleen dode takken wegknippen. Plant heeft van nature mooie vorm.

Water eerste jaren regelmatig. Gevestigde planten zijn droogteverdragend. Bescherm rijpende bessen tegen vogels indien gewenst.

Meelbes ondersteunt meer dan 120 vogelsoorten en is waardplant voor diverse vlinders. Bloemen bieden vroege nectar aan bijen.

Plant werd door inheemse Amerikaanse stammen als belangrijke voedselbron gebruikt en 'serviceberry' genoemd.
