# Mannetjesvaren

## Dryopteris filix-mas

Mannetjesvaren (Dryopteris filix-mas) is een robuuste inheemse varen met grote, dubbel geveerde wedels die perfecte schaduwbodembedekking vormt en een van de meest betrouwbare varens is voor tuingebruik. Deze wintergroene varen wordt 60-120 cm hoog en vormt dichte pollen met elegante, overhangede wedels die lichtgroen uitkomen en donkergroen worden.

De wedels zijn breed en dubbel geveerd met karakteristieke bruine schubben aan de steel. Plant is semi-wintergroen en behoudt veel wedels door winter heen. Sporenhoopjes verschijnen aan onderkant van wedels en zijn rond met nierachtig dekschubje. Mannetjesvaren is essentieel voor natuurlijke schaduwtuinen waar betrouwbare varens en bossfeer gewenst zijn.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Mannetjesvaren groeit in de natuur als ondergroei in loofhout- en naaldhoutbeplantingen. Hij heeft een vochtige, vruchtbare bodem nodig. Hij is gevoelig voor stagnerend water in de winter. Plantdichtheid: 3 - 5 per m²

### Cultivars (Soorten)

D. filix-mas 'Barnesii' heeft een donkergroen blad; 'Linearis Polydactylon' is beter bekend als de schildvaren. Beide planten worden minder fors en per 6 - 9/m² aangeplant; D. affinis heeft een donkergroen, stevig blad en wordt tot 120 cm hoog; D. wallichiana heeft kenmerkende zwarte bladstelen en -nerven.

### Onderhoud

Plant mannetjesvaren in halfschaduw tot schaduw in vochtige, humusrijke grond. Varen verdraagt droge omstandigheden redelijk goed.

Knip oude wedels in voorjaar weg voor nieuwe groei. Verdeel grote pollen om de 5-8 jaar voor verjonging.

Water tijdens droge periodes. Mulch met bladmateriaal voor vochtigheid en voeding. Geen bemesting nodig.

Mannetjesvaren was historisch belangrijk geneesmiddel tegen lintworm. Wortelstok werd gedroogd en gebruikt als medicijn.
