Mammoetblad (Gunnera manicata) is een spectaculaire reusachtige plant met bladeren die wel 2 meter doorsnede kunnen bereiken en enorme, kegelvormige bloemstengels die een tropische sfeer creëren bij waterpartijen. Deze Zuid-Amerikaanse plant wordt 2-3 meter hoog en breed en heeft diep gelobde, ruwe bladeren op stekelige stelen. De bladeren zijn de grootste van alle winterharde planten en hebben diepe nerven die een sculpturale textuur geven. Bloemen verschijnen in enorme, roodbruine kegels die tot 1,5 meter hoog kunnen worden. Plant heeft vochtige grond en beschutting tegen wind nodig. De bodem moet vochtig zijn. Een moeraszone of ondiep water is ideaal. ### Onderhoud Plant mammoetblad in halfschaduw in constant vochtige, voedselrijke grond bij water. Plant verdraagt geen uitdroging. Bescherm wortelkroon in winter door afgestorven bladeren over kroon te vouwen en extra te mulchen. Water overvloedig tijdens groei. Bemest regelmatig - plant heeft veel voeding nodig voor enorme bladeren. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Mammoetblad leeft in symbiose met stikstofbindende bacteriën in speciale bladklieren - uniek onder planten.
