# Mahoniestruik

## Mahonia aquifolium 'Apollo'

Mahoniestruik (Mahonia) is een wintergroene struik met geveerd, doorig bladerwerk en geurende gele bloemen in dichte trossen die gevolgd worden door blauwe bessen die vogels aantrekken. Deze architecturale plant wordt 1-3 meter hoog en heeft grote, samengestelde bladeren met doorige bladranden die in winter vaak roodachtig verkleuren.

De bloemen verschijnen vaak al in winter (december-maart) in grote, rechtopstaande trossen van kleine, gele bloemen die intensief geuren. Na bloei ontwikkelen zich druifachtige trossen van blauwe bessen die populair zijn bij vogels. Mahoniestruik is essentieel voor winterstructuur en vroege bijenvoeding waar wintergroene architectuur met seizoensinteresse gewenst is.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

De mahoniestruik doet het goed op een vruchtbare, goed doorlatende, eerder zure bodem. Hij houdt niet van volle middagzon.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

'Compacta' is een meer gedrongen vorm die half zo hoog wordt.

### Onderhoud

Plant mahoniestruik in halfschaduw tot schaduw in normale tuingrond. Plant verdraagt droge omstandigheden goed eens gevestigd.

Snoei na bloei alleen indien nodig voor vorm. Plant heeft van nature mooie architecturale vorm.

Water eerste jaren regelmatig. Mulch rond plant voor vochtigheid. Bescherm tegen koude winden bij jonge planten.

### Dit wist je nog niet:

Mahonia is vernoemd naar Bernard M'Mahon, Amerikaans botanicus uit 18de eeuw. Plant ondersteunt vroege bijen en vogels.

Sommige soorten zijn zeer geurig en worden als parfumplant gebruikt. Wortelschors werd traditioneel gebruikt als gele verfstof.
