# Leeuwenbek

## Antirrhinum majus

Leeuwenbek (Antirrhinum majus) is een kleurrijke eenjarige plant met karakteristieke bloemen die opengaan als je ze zachtjes knijpt, vandaar de naam leeuwenbek. Deze populaire borderplant wordt 20-80 cm hoog afhankelijk van de cultivar en bloeit van mei tot vorst met bloemen in wit, geel, oranje, roze, rood of paars. De bloemen hebben een unieke vorm met een bovenste en onderste lip die een 'bek' vormen.

Plant bloeit in dichte aren en is uitstekend geschikt als snijbloem. Moderne cultivars zijn resistent tegen roest, een veel voorkomende ziekte bij oudere variëteiten. Leeuwenbek is essentieel voor cottage gardens en snijtuinen waar kleurrijke, langdurige bloei gewenst is.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Leeuwenbek is kalkminnend en doet het goed in een kalkrijke, losse bodem. Hij groeit goed in de zon en verdraagt schaduw. Plantdichtheid: 10 - 15 per m²

### Onderhoud

Plant leeuwenbek in volle zon in goed doorlatende, vochtige grond. Plant verdraagt lichte schaduw maar bloeit minder rijk.

Water regelmatig aan de voet van plant. Knip uitgebloeide aren weg voor nieuwe bloei. Ondersteun hoge cultivars.

Bemest maandelijks voor optimale bloei. Bij eerste tekenen van roest: verwijder aangetaste bladeren en verbeter luchtcirculatie.

### Dit wist je nog niet:

Leeuwenbek symboliseert misleiding en bedrog in bloemensymboliek vanwege de 'valse' mond. Kinderen spelen graag met de knijpbare bloemen.

Moderne kweek heeft geleid tot vele nieuwe kleuren en roestresistente variëteiten die betrouwbaarder zijn dan oude soorten.
