# Laurier

## Laurus nobilis

Laurier (Laurus nobilis) is een aromatische wintergroene struik of boom met donkergroene, leerachtige bladeren die traditioneel gebruikt worden als keukenkruid en voor topiary-vormen. Deze mediterrane plant kan 2-8 meter hoog worden en heeft glanzende, ovale bladeren die bij aanraking een intense, kruidig geur verspreiden.

Plant bloeit in voorjaar met kleine, geelwitte bloemen die zich ontwikkelen tot zwarte bessen op vrouwelijke planten. Laurier is tweehuizig - mannelijke en vrouwelijke bloemen staan op verschillende planten. Bladeren behouden hun aroma het hele jaar en zijn essentieel in mediterrane keuken. Laurier is essentieel voor keukentuinen waar verse kruiden en decoratieve topiary-vormen gewenst zijn.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Wintergevoelige plant die onze Vlaamse winters alleen overleeft op een heel beschutte, warme plek zoals een stadstuin op het zuiden of een patio van een publiek gebouw.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

'Aurea' heeft een opvallend gougeel blad; 'Bay Junior' is een Belgische selectie met kleine blaadjes en een compacte groei; Laurus nobilis 'Angustifolia' heeft een smal, wilgachtig, leerachtig blad dat eindigt in een puntje. Het blad is opmerkelijk lichter van kleur dan de doorsnee laurier.

### Onderhoud

Plant laurier in volle zon tot lichte schaduw in goed doorlatende grond. In pot: gebruik doorlatende potgrond.

Snoei voor vorm - laurier verdraagt topiary-snoei uitstekend. Oogst bladeren het hele jaar voor keukengebruik.

Bescherm tegen strenge vorst of kweek in pot. Water matig - plant verdraagt droogte beter dan wateroverlast.

### Dit wist je nog niet:

Laurier is symbool van overwinning en werd gebruikt voor lauwerkransen in Romeinse tijd. Academische titels refereren nog steeds naar laurier.

Plant speelt belangrijke rol in mediterrane keukens en wordt beschouwd als onmisbaar kruid voor stoofpotten en sauzen.
