Deze krachtige klimmer kan 20-30 meter hoog worden en vormt dichte begroeiing die het hele jaar groen blijft en belangrijke schuilplaatsen biedt voor vogels en kleine dieren. Oudere klimopplanten ontwikkelen bloeiende takken met ongedeelde bladeren en geel-groene bloemen in herfst, gevolgd door zwarte bessen die belangrijk voedsel zijn voor vogels in winter. Jonge planten hebben de karakteristieke 3-5 lobbige bladeren. Klimop is essentieel voor wildlife-vriendelijke tuinen waar jaar-rond groene bedekking en ecologische waarde gewenst zijn. Dat de plant goed tegen schaduw kan, maakt haar nog veelzijdiger en aantrekkelijker. En dat ze ondiep wortelt en dus geen heel zware diepe pot nodig heeft om goed te groeien, maakt klimop tot een van de weinige kamerplanten die ook in een lage schaal kunnen worden geplaatst. In de tuin is klimop niet veeleisend, hij doet het goed in vrijwel elke bodem en groeit in de zon, halfschaduw en zelfs schaduw. ### Cultivars (Soorten) H. helix 'Buttercup' heeft een geel blad; 'Hibernica' is de grootbladige klimop (slechts 4 tot 6 planten per m²); 'Hibernica Maculata' en 'Sulphurea' zijn bontbladige cultivars; Hedera helix ‘Arborescens’, struikklimop groeit tot 1,5 m hoog en vormt zich als een struik; Hedera helix 'Woerneri'​ is grootbladig, tot 50 cm hoog en groeit heel breed uit; Hedera colchica ' Arborescens', Perzische klimop is een breed uitgroeiende dwergstruik met een groot, blinkend, hartvormig tot ovaal, gelobd blad met bleke nerven. ### Onderhoud Plant klimop in halfschaduw tot schaduw in normale tuingrond. Plant groeit praktisch overal en is zeer adaptief. Snoei regelmatig om vorm te behouden en overwoekering te voorkomen. Plant groeit zeer krachtig zonder controle. Water alleen eerste jaar na aanplant. Daarna volledig zelfvoorzienend. Geen bemesting nodig. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Klimop ondersteunt meer dan 50 insectensoorten en biedt essentieel wintervoedsel aan vogels. Cruciaal voor stedelijke biodiversiteit. Plant symboliseert trouw en eeuwigheid.
