Deze middelgrote boom wordt 10-15 meter hoog en heeft een open kroon met ovale bladeren die in herfst geel verkleuren. De geurende bloemen hangen in 10-15 cm lange trossen en verschijnen gelijktijdig met de bladeren. De kleine zwarte vruchten zijn eetbaar maar bitter en worden vooral door vogels gegeten. Boom groeit snel en is zeer winterhard. Kerselaar is essentieel voor natuurlijke tuinen waar inheemse bomen met wildlife-waarde gewenst zijn. De boom verdraagt geen verharding en is gevoelig aan wind. ### Cultivars (Soorten) De lekkerste kersen zijn 'Bigarreau's'. De minst ziektegevoelige zijn 'Kordia'; (een verbeterde versie van 'Hedelfinger'), 'Lapins' en 'Regina'. ### Onderhoud Plant kerselaar in volle zon tot halfschaduw in vochtige, voedselrijke grond. Boom groeit in verschillende grondsoorten. Snoei minimaal - alleen dode takken wegknippen. Boom heeft natuurlijke mooie vorm en bloeit op oud hout. Water eerste jaren regelmatig. Gevestigde bomen zijn droogteverdragend. Geef ruimte voor natuurlijke kroonuitbreiding. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Kerselaar ondersteunt meer dan 150 insectensoorten en is cruciaal voor vele vogel- en zoogdiersoorten. Belangrijke biodiversiteitsplant. Schors werd traditioneel gebruikt voor het looien van leer en als geneesmiddel.
