# Kardinaalsmuts (fortunei)

## Euonymus fortunei

Kardinaalsmuts fortunei (Euonymus fortunei) is een wintergroene, lage struik of bodembedekker die kan klimmen en uitstekend geschikt is voor moeilijke plekken waar wintergroene bedekking gewenst is. Deze veelzijdige plant blijft laag (30-60 cm) of klimt tot 3 meter hoog tegen muren en heeft kleine, leerachtige bladeren die vaak bont zijn.

De plant heeft twee groeifases - juveniel als bodembedekker met kleine bladeren, en volwassen als klimplant met grotere bladeren en bloemen. Vele cultivars hebben bonte bladeren met witte, gele of roze randen die het hele jaar kleur geven. Kardinaalsmuts fortunei is essentieel voor moeilijke tuinplekken waar wintergroene, onderhoudsarme bedekking nodig is.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Hij wortelt oppervlakkig en stelt weinig eisen aan de bodem. Kardinaalsmuts staat best op een plaatsje in de volle zon of halfschaduw met een goed doorlatende bodem.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

De bontbladige Dart's Blanket, Emerald 'n Gold en vooral Emerald Gaiety zijn de mooiste. Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald Gaiety' is een laagblijvende, bossige vorm die sterk in de breedte uitgroeit. Kan ook toegepast worden als klimmer over muurtjes en stenen. De groene elliptische bladeren hebben een witte rand die in winter vaak als een roze zweem kleurt; Euonymus fortunei ‘Dart’s Blanket' is een liggende tot bossige kruiper die met hechtwortels klimt; Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald ‘n Gold’ is een laagblijvende, bossige vorm die sterk in de breedte uitgroeit met groene bladeren met een brede goudgele rand die in winter vaak een roze zweem hebben.

### Onderhoud

Plant kardinaalsmuts fortunei in halfschaduw tot schaduw in normale tuingrond. Plant verdraagt bijna alle omstandigheden.

Knip jaarlijks in vorm voor bodembedekking of laat klimmen tegen steun. Plant groeit langzaam maar gestaag.

Water eerste jaar regelmatig. Daarna zeer onderhoudsarm en droogteverdragend. Geen bemesting nodig.

Euonymus fortunei is vernoemd naar plant-explorer Robert Fortune die de plant in 19de eeuw uit China naar Europa bracht.

Plant is zeer geschikt voor stedelijke omstandigheden en verdraagt luchtvervuiling, zout en extreme omstandigheden.
