# Kardinaalsmuts (alatus)

## Euonymus alatus

Kardinaalsmuts alatus (Euonymus alatus) is de botanische benaming voor de spectaculaire struik die beroemd is om zijn vuurrode herfstverkleuring en karakteristieke gevleugelde takken die het hele jaar interessante structuur geven.

Deze compacte struik wordt 1,5-2,5 meter hoog en transformeert in herfst van onopvallend groen naar een van de meest opvallende kleurdisplays. De gevleugelde takken ('alatus' betekent gevleugeld) zijn kurkvormige uitgroeiingen langs de stengels die vooral zichtbaar worden na bladval en winterinteresse geven. De kleine bladeren verkleuren in herfst spectaculair van groen via oranje naar felrood of magenta. Kardinaalsmuts alatus is essentieel voor tuinen waar herfstkleur en winterstructuur centraal staan.

### Waar plaatsen

Hij wortelt oppervlakkig en stelt weinig eisen aan de bodem. Kardinaalsmuts staat best op een plaatsje in de volle zon of halfschaduw.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

E. alatus 'Compactus' wordt bijna 2 m hoog.

### Onderhoud

Plant kardinaalsmuts alatus in volle zon voor intensiefste herfstkleur. Plant groeit in verschillende grondsoorten maar kleurt het best in zon.

Geen bemesting nodig - rijke grond vermindert herfstkleur. Laat plant natuurlijk groeien voor beste vorm en kleurontwikkeling.

Minimale snoei - alleen dode takken wegknippen. Gevleugelde takken zijn decoratief en moeten behouden blijven.

De botanische naam 'alatus' onderscheidt deze soort van andere kardinaalsmuts-soorten die geen gevleugelde takken hebben.

Plant wordt in engelstalige landen 'Burning Bush' genoemd vanwege de intense rode herfstkleur die lijkt op vlammen.
