# Kalmoes

## Acorus calamus

Kalmoes (Acorus calamus) is een inheemse oeverplant met zwaardvormige bladeren en een karakteristieke geur wanneer bladeren worden gewreven, traditioneel gebruikt als geneeskruid en nu populair voor natuurlijke vijverranden. Deze grassachtige plant wordt 60-120 cm hoog en heeft lange, smalle bladeren die rechtop groeien vanuit de wortelstok.

De plant bloeit met onopvallende bruingroene kolven die schuin uit de bladeren steken. Kalmoes verspreidt zich via ondergrondse wortelstokken en vormt geleidelijk dichte kolonies langs waterranden of in ondiepe water. Kalmoes is essentieel voor natuurlijke vijvers en moerastuinen waar inheemse oeverplanten en wildlife-waarde gewenst zijn.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Kalmoes is geschikt voor iets vochtigere plaatsen. Plant kalmoes nooit in de moeraszone dieper dan 30cm, dan zal hij gaan rotten. Geschikte plant voor verwildering. Plantdichtheid: 5 - 7 per m².

### Onderhoud

Plant kalmoes in ondiepe water (5-15 cm) of constant natte grond in volle zon tot halfschaduw. Plant groeit in verschillende waterdieptes.

Verdun uitbreidende pollen om de 3-4 jaar door overtollige wortelstokken weg te nemen. Plant heeft verder geen onderhoud nodig.

Knip in voorjaar oude bladeren weg voor frisse groei. Wortelstokken zijn winterhard en komen elk jaar weer op.

Kalmoes werd historisch gebruikt als geneesmiddel voor maagklachten en als natuurlijk insectenwerende middel. Wortelstok heeft medicinale eigenschappen.

Plant speelt belangrijke rol in wetland-ecosystemen en biedt habitat voor waterinsecten en beschutting voor kleine vissen.
