# Japanse sneeuwbal

## Viburnum plicatum

Japanse sneeuwbal (Viburnum plicatum) is een elegante struik met horizontaal geëtageerde takken en spectaculaire witte bloemen in bolvormige schermen die in mei de struik als sneeuwballen bedekken. Deze breed groeiende struik wordt 2-3 meter hoog en heeft geplooid bladerwerk dat in herfst rood-paars verkleurt.

De bloemen verschijnen in grote, ronde schermen van 8-15 cm doorsnede en bestaan volledig uit steriele bloemen, waardoor ze lang houden en zeer decoratief zijn. Na bloei ontwikkelen sommige cultivars rode bessen, hoewel de meeste vormen steriel zijn. Japanse sneeuwbal is onmisbaar voor tuinen waar spectaculaire voorjaarsbloei en architecturale structuur gewenst zijn.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Viburnum plant je in een humusrijke bodem op een plaatsje in de volle zon of halfschaduw.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

V. plicatum tomentosum is een middelgrote soort, die tot 2 m hoog wordt; V. plicatum tomentosum 'Watanabe' wordt 1,8 tot 2 meter hoog en bloeit zeer rijk en lang, van mei tot september; 'Mariesi' blijft lager (ca 1,5 meter). Beide cultivars hebben typische gelaagde takken. Viburnum opulus is een inheemse soort, d.w.z. dat hij hier van nature voorkomt.

### Onderhoud

Plant Japanse sneeuwbal in halfschaduw tot zon in vochtige, humusrijke grond. Struik bloeit het best in beschutte locatie.

Snoei spaarzaam direct na bloei - alleen voor vorm. Respecteer natuurlijke horizontale groeipatroon van takken.

Water regelmatig, vooral tijdens droge periodes. Mulch rond plant helpt vocht vasthouden. Bemest jaarlijks met compost.

### Dit wist je nog niet:

Japanse sneeuwbal wordt ook 'Japanese snowball' genoemd. Plant is een cultuurvorm die door selectie ontstaan is uit wilde soorten.
