De plant blijft doorgaans laag, met een hoogte tussen 50 en 150 cm, en heeft kleine, donkergroene blaadjes zonder de stekels die kenmerkend zijn voor gewone hulst. De bloei is discreet, met kleine witte bloemen, gevolgd door kleine zwarte besjes op vrouwelijke planten. Dankzij de compacte groei en uitstekende snoeiverdraagzaamheid is Japanse hulst bijzonder geschikt voor topiary, lage hagen en vormgesnoeide accenten. Japanse hulst wint de laatste jaren sterk aan populariteit in Europese tuinen. In Japan staat de plant bekend als inutsuge en wordt hij traditioneel toegepast in hagen rond tempels en in formele tuinen. ### Cultivars (Soorten) I. crenata 'Golden Gem' is een breedgroeiende, geelbladige selectie. ### Onderhoud Plant Japanse hulst in halfschaduw tot zon in goed doorlatende grond. Plant verdraagt verschillende grondsoorten en pH-waarden goed. Snoei 2-3 keer per jaar tijdens groeiseizoen voor vorm. Plant verdraagt snoeien uitstekend en vormt dichte structuren.
