# Japanse broodboom

## Aucuba japonica

De Japanse broodboom, beter bekend als de Chinese of watercipres (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), is een levende fossiel die miljoenen jaren verdwenen leek maar in 1941 opnieuw werd ontdekt in China. Deze bladverliezende conifeer heeft frisgroene, zacht aanvoelende naalden die in de herfst een warme koperkleur aannemen voordat ze afvallen.

Met zijn piramidale vorm en sierlijke horizontale takstand is hij een blikvanger in parken en grote tuinen. De broodboom kan 25 tot 30 meter hoog worden en voelt zich thuis op vochtige, vruchtbare bodems. Hij gedijt goed bij vijvers en langs waterpartijen, waar de bodem nooit volledig uitdroogt. Ondanks zijn exotische oorsprong is de boom verrassend winterhard en bestand tegen ons klimaat.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

De plant verdraagt luchtvervuiling en is zoutbestendig. Het is een makkelijke plant. Plantdichtheid: 1 per m²

### Cultivars (Soorten)

De beste broodbomen voor de tuin zijn 'Crotonifolia' (met grotere bladeren en veel gele vlekken), 'Golden King' en 'Rozannie', die tweeslachtig is en dus altijd bessen aanmaakt. 'Aucuba japonica f. longifolia' heeft een smal groen blad.

### Onderhoud

De Japanse broodboom vraagt weinig onderhoud. Omdat het een snelgroeiende boom is, is snoeien enkel nodig om dode of kruisende takken te verwijderen. Doe dit bij voorkeur in de late winter of het vroege voorjaar, voor de sapstroom op gang komt. Geef jonge bomen tijdens droge zomers extra water zodat de wortels zich goed kunnen ontwikkelen. Een mulchlaag rond de stam helpt vocht vasthouden en beschermt de wortelzone.

De boom heeft geen specifieke meststof nodig, maar een jaarlijkse gift van organische compost in het voorjaar ondersteunt de groei. Let erop dat de bodem vochtig blijft; de broodboom verdraagt geen langdurige droogte.

De Japanse broodboom wordt ook wel een ‘levend fossiel’ genoemd. Fossiele resten van deze soort zijn gevonden die meer dan 100 miljoen jaar oud zijn. Tot zijn herontdekking in de twintigste eeuw werd gedacht dat de boom was uitgestorven. Vandaag staat de broodboom symbool voor veerkracht en tijdloosheid.

In botanische tuinen wereldwijd wordt hij gekoesterd als levende herinnering aan de oertijd en als blikvanger voor bezoekers. Zijn zeldzame status en snelle groei maken hem geliefd bij verzamelaars van bijzondere bomen.
