# Iep - Olm

## Ulmus 'Sapporo Autumn Gold'

Iep (Ulmus) is een majestueuze inheemse loofboom met karakteristieke asymmetrische bladeren en een brede, koepelvormige kroon die eeuwenlang dorpspleinen en lanen heeft gedefinieerd. Deze snelgroeiende boom kan 25-35 meter hoog worden en heeft ovale bladeren met dubbel gezaagde randen die in herfst goudgeel verkleuren.

De boom bloeit vroeg in voorjaar met kleine roodachtige bloemen voordat de bladeren uitlopen, gevolgd door gevleugelde vruchten die op Chinese muntjes lijken. Helaas zijn veel oude iepen weggevallen door de iepenziekte, maar resistente cultivars maken een comeback mogelijk. Iep is essentieel voor historische tuinen en landschappelijke beplanting waar monumentale bomen met culturele waarde gewenst zijn.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Onderhoud

Plant iep in volle zon in diepe, vochtige, voedselrijke grond. Boom groeit het best in beschutte locatie met ruimte voor kroonuitbreiding.

Snoei jonge bomen voor goede kroonopbouw in winter. Oudere bomen hebben minimale snoei nodig. Monitor op tekenen van iepenziekte.

Kies resistente cultivars voor nieuwe aanplant. Water jonge bomen tijdens droge periodes. Geef voldoende ruimte voor uiteindelijke grootte.

Iep ondersteunt meer dan 80 insectensoorten en is historisch zeer belangrijk voor Europese ecosystemen. Boom symboliseert kracht en uithoudingsvermogen.

Iepenhout is zeer sterk en buigzaam, traditioneel gebruikt voor scheepsbouw en waterwerken. Boom kan meer dan 300 jaar oud worden.
