# Hulst

## Ilex aquifolium

Hulst (Ilex aquifolium) is een inheemse wintergroene struik of boom met glanzende, stekelige bladeren en heldere rode bessen die traditioneel geassocieerd worden met kerst. Deze langzaam groeiende plant wordt 6-15 meter hoog en heeft donkergroene bladeren met karakteristieke doorns, hoewel oudere bomen vaak gladrandige bladeren ontwikkelen.

Hulst is tweehuizig - mannelijke en vrouwelijke bloemen staan op verschillende planten. Voor de decoratieve rode bessen zijn zowel mannelijke als vrouwelijke planten nodig. De kleine, witte bloemen verschijnen in mei-juni en zijn geliefd bij bijen. Hulst is essentieel voor traditionele tuinen en wildlife-vriendelijke beplanting waar jaar-rond structuur en vogelvriendelijke bessen gewenst zijn.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Hulst verlangt een diepe, goed doorlatende, vochtige grond. De plant is zowel geschikt als solitair als in groep.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

Blauwe hulst, Ilex x meserveae ‘Blue Princess’, heeft een decoratief sterk glimmend blad. Deze cultivar is goed bestand tegen wind; Amerikaanse hulst, Ilex x meserveae 'Blue Angel', is zeer geschikt voor blokhagen; Scherpe hulst, Ilex aquifolium 'J. C. Van Tol', is een vrijwel stekeloze hulst. Deze cultivar verdraagt zeewind; Ilex aquifolium 'Argentea Marginata' heeft een hoge sierwaarde. Het jonge schot heeft brede, zachtroze zanden die naar wit verkleuren; Ilex aquifolium 'Golden Queen' is een laag blijvende cultivar met een goud/gele bladrand; Ilex aquifolium 'Pyramidalis' is een hoge hulst die vrij smal blijft.

### Onderhoud

Plant hulst in halfschaduw tot zon in goed doorlatende, vochtige grond. Plant verdraagt verschillende grondsoorten maar groeit best in humusrijke omgeving.

Snoei in late winter voor haagvorming. Vrij groeiende hulst heeft nauwelijks snoei nodig. Let op scherpe doorns bij alle werkzaamheden.

Water eerste jaren regelmatig. Gevestigde planten zijn droogteverdragend. Voor bessen: plant 1 mannelijke bij 5-6 vrouwelijke exemplaren.

Hulst ondersteunt meer dan 30 insectensoorten en biedt nestgelegenheid aan vogels. Plant is essentieel voor winterse biodiversiteit.

Traditioneel symbool van bescherming en geluk. Hulst werd al door Romeinen gebruikt voor winterdecoraties en is onlosmakelijk verbonden met kersttraditie.
