# Hortensia

## Hydrangea sp.

Hortensia (Hydrangea) is een populaire bloeiende struik met grote, bolvormige of platte bloemen in wit, roze, blauw of paars die de hele zomer lang de tuin opfleuren. Deze veelzijdige struik wordt 1-3 meter hoog en heeft grote, ovale bladeren die een mooie achtergrond vormen voor de spectaculaire bloemen.

De bloemkleur kan beïnvloed worden door de zuurgraad van de grond - zure grond geeft blauwe bloemen, alkalische grond roze bloemen. Witte hortensias behouden hun kleur ongeacht de pH. De bloemen zijn uitstekend geschikt als snijbloem en voor droogbloemen. Hortensia is onmisbaar voor cottage gardens en romantische borders waar lange bloeiperiodes en seizoenskleur centraal staan.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Hortensia heeft een humusrijke, neutraal tot licht zure en voldoende vochthoudende bodem nodig. Er zijn hortensia's die graag in de volle zon staan en andere die net een plekje in de schaduw nodig hebben. Vraag dit even na bij het lokale tuincentrum.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Schneeball', in het nederlands sneeuwbal, bloeit van juli tot oktober met witte, grote, volumineuze, eindstandige bollen van dicht op elkaar staande bloemblaadjes. Verkleuren in de herfst naar rozerood; Hydrangea paniculata 'Mega Mindy' bloeit van augustus tot oktober met indrukwekkende, kegelvormige pluimbloemen die mooi rechtop blijven staan. Eerst wit, later in de herfst intens rozerood; Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' bloeit van juli tot september met spectaculaire bolvormige tuilen, die samengesteld zijn uit vele kleine bloempjes, van wel 20 tot 30 cm diameter. De kleur evolueert van zuiver wit naar groenwit; Hydrangea paniculata 'Bobo' is een kleine variant van de hortensia en wordt slechts 70 cm hoog. Deze cultivar bloeit rijkelijk van juli tot september met typische kegelvormige pluimbloemen die van witgroen naar lichtroze verkleuren; Hydrangea paniculata 'Pinky Winky' is een pluimhortensia met een mooie bloei van juli tot oktober. De bloemen zijn kegelvormige witte bloempluimen die in de herfst sterk donkerroze-rood verkleuren.

### Onderhoud

Plant hortensia in halfschaduw in vochtige, humusrijke grond. Plant verdraagt ochtendzon, maar heeft beschutting nodig tegen hete middagzon.

Water regelmatig - hortensia is dorstig en laat bladeren hangen bij droogte. Mulch rond plant helpt vocht vasthouden.

Snoei licht na bloei door uitgebloeide takken te verkorten. Voor kleurverandering: pas grond-pH aan met zure of kalkrijke toevoegingen.

Hortensia symboliseert dankbaarheid en oprechte emoties in bloemensymboliek. Plant werd in 18de eeuw vanuit Azië naar Europa gebracht.

Moderne cultivars bloeien op nieuw hout en zijn betrouwbaarder dan oude soorten. 'Endless Summer' serie bloeit op zowel oud als nieuw hout.
