# Honingboom

## Styphnolobium japonicum

Honingboom (Gleditsia triacanthos) is een elegante loofboom met geveerde bladeren en karakteristieke lange doorns aan stam en takken, hoewel doornloze cultivars beschikbaar zijn. Deze Noord-Amerikaanse boom wordt 20-25 meter hoog en heeft lichtgroen, dubbel geveerd bladerwerk dat elegante, gefilterde schaduw werpt.

De boom bloeit onopvallend in mei-juni maar produceert opvallende, kronkelige peulen van 20-40 cm lang die zoet vruchtvlees bevatten - vandaar de naam honingboom. De bladeren verkleuren in herfst helder goudgeel. Honingboom is perfect voor grote tuinen en stedelijke beplanting waar lichte schaduw en bijzondere architectuur gewenst zijn.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

De honingboom verkiest een plaatsje in de halfschaduw met een neutrale bodem.

### Onderhoud

Plant honingboom in volle zon in goed doorlatende grond. Boom verdraagt droogte, wind en stedelijke omstandigheden uitstekend.

Snoei jonge bomen voor goede kroonopbouw. Oudere bomen hebben nauwelijks snoei nodig. Let op doorns bij doornige cultivars.

Water eerste jaren regelmatig. Gevestigde bomen zijn zeer droogteverdragend en onderhoudsarm. Kies doornloze cultivars voor veiligheid.

Honingboom heeft stikstofbindende eigenschappen via wortelknolletjes en verbetert grond. Boom is zeer waardevol voor biodiversiteit en stedelijke ecosystemen.

In oorspronkelijke habitat werden peulen gebruikt door indianen als voedsel en zoetmiddel. Hout is zeer hard en werd gebruikt voor werktuigen.
