# Hibiscus

## Hibiscus syriacus

Hibiscus is een spectaculaire bloemplant met enorme, trompetbloemen die wel 25 cm doorsnede kunnen bereiken in kleuren van wit en geel tot roze, rood en paars, vaak met contrasterende kelen. Deze warmteminnende plant bloeit van juli tot oktober met bloemen die meestal maar één dag open zijn, maar continu vervangen worden door nieuwe knoppen.

De grote, hartonderige bladeren vormen een mooie achtergrond voor de dramatische bloemen. Hibiscus wordt zowel als eenjarige (tropische soorten) als winterharde vaste plant (hibiscus moscheutos) gekweekt. Hibiscus is onmisbaar voor tropische tuinen en exotische borders waar dramatische bloei centraal staat.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Groeit liefs in luchtige goed doorlatende humusrijke grond, uit de felle middagzon.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

Hibiscus syriacus 'Azurri' heeft enkele, blauwe bloemen, met een wijnrode middenvlek, die 1 à 3 dagen houden, maar wel 2 volle maanden lang; 'Oiseau bleu' bloeit blauwpaars; Hibiscus syriacus 'Cielo' is een goed groeiende struik, tot 2m hoog. Deze hibiscus heeft blauwe bloemen met een donkerrood hart dat sterk uitstraalt; Hibiscus syriacus 'Rosso' met roze bloemen; 'Hamabo' roze met rode vlekken; 'Woodbridge' diep roze; 'Pastello' is een hibiscus zonder zaadvorming met lichtroze bloemen; Hibiscus syriacus 'Bianco' met witte bloemen; 'William R. Smith' zuiver wit; 'Red Heart' wit met rood hart.

### Onderhoud

Plant hibiscus in volle zon in vochtige, voedselrijke grond. Tropische soorten in kuipen, winterharde soorten direct in border.

Water overvloedig - hibiscus is zeer dorstig, vooral bij warme weer. Bemest wekelijks met bloemenvoeding voor continue bloei.

Tropische soorten: overwinter vorstvrij binnen bij 10-15 °C. Winterharde soorten: knip in maart terug tot grondniveau.

Hibiscus bloemen worden gebruikt voor hibiscusthee die rijk is aan vitamine C en antioxidanten. Bloemen zijn eetbaar en worden gebruikt in salades.

In tropische landen symboliseert hibiscus schoonheid en leven. Hawaiian hibiscus is de staatsbloem van Hawaï en wordt gebruikt in leis.
