# Hertshooi

## Hypericum 'Hidcote'

Hertshooi (Hypericum) is een veelzijdige plantengroep met goudgele bloemen die opvallen door hun massa's lange, goudkleurige meeldraden die als een stralenkrans uit de bloemen steken. Deze robuuste planten variëren van lage bodembedekkers tot opgaande struiken en bloeien rijkelijk van juni tot oktober.

De vijfbladige bloemen hebben een zijdeachtige glans en verschijnen vaak in grote aantallen. Na bloei ontwikkelen zich decoratieve rode of zwarte bessen bij sommige soorten. Hertshooi heeft een lange geschiedenis als geneeskrachtige plant. Hertshooi is uitstekend geschikt voor onderhoudsarme tuinen waar langdurige gele bloei gewenst is.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Hertshooi stelt geen eisen aan de bodem, ook verdraagt de plant de droogte goed.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

Hypericum × dummeri 'Peter Dummer' groeit breed uit, met overhangende takken, en vormt een dicht tapijt met een rijke en overdadige bloei.

### Onderhoud

Plant hertshooi in volle zon tot lichte schaduw in goed doorlatende grond. Plant verdraagt droge, arme grond uitstekend eens gevestigd.

Snoei in maart door oude takken terug te knippen tot 20 cm boven grond. Dit stimuleert nieuwe groei en rijke bloei.

Water alleen bij extreme droogte. Plant is zeer onderhoudsarm en zelfvoorzienend. Bemesting niet nodig.

### Dit wist je nog niet:

Sint-Janskruid (Hypericum perforatum) wordt traditioneel gebruikt tegen depressie en wordt nog steeds in fytotherapie toegepast. Wetenschappelijk onderzoek bevestigt antidepressieve werking.

Hertshooi bloeit rond Sint-Jan (24 juni), vandaar de naam Sint-Janskruid. Plant werd historisch gebruikt om boze geesten te weren.
