# Herfstaster

## Aster novae-angliae

Herfstaster (Aster) is een onmisbare herfstbloemer die de tuin opfleurt wanneer veel andere planten al uitgebloeid zijn, met massa's kleine madeliefjesachtige bloemen in paars, roze, wit of blauw van augustus tot november. Deze vaste plant vormt dichte pollen van 30-150 cm hoog en trekt in herfst clouds van vlinders aan die voedsel zoeken voor de winter.

De bloemen verschijnen in grote aantallen en bedekken de plant volledig in een zee van kleur. Herfstasters zijn onmisbaar voor late seizoensnectar en bieden cruciale voeding aan bijen, vlinders en andere bestuivers wanneer andere bronnen schaars worden. Herfstaster is essentieel voor natuurlijke tuinen en wilde borders waar late seizoenskleur en wildlife-waarde centraal staan.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Herfstaster groeit goed op open plaatsen met een goed doorlatende, voedselrijke grond. Plantdichtheid: 2 - 3 per m²

### Cultivars (Soorten)

A. novae-angliae 'Andenken an Alma Pötschke' bloeit felroze. 'Purple Dome' is een rijkbloeiende, sterke cultivar met paarse bloemen.

### Onderhoud

Plant herfstaster in volle zon in goed doorlatende, normale tuingrond. Te rijke grond maakt plant te weelderig en gevoelig voor omvallen.

Knip in mei/juni topjes uit voor compactere groei en meer bloemen. Verdeel pollen om de 3-4 jaar voor verjonging.

Water tijdens droge periodes maar plant is redelijk droogteverdragend. Bemesting niet nodig - arme grond houdt plant compacter.

Herfstaster ondersteunt meer dan 40 vlindersoorten en is een van de belangrijkste late nectarplanten. Essential voor monarch vlinders tijdens migratie.

Amerikaanse soorten worden vaak 'New England Aster' genoemd. Europese soorten zijn meestal compacter en beter geschikt voor kleinere tuinen.
