# Grote maagdenpalm

## Vinca major

Grote maagdenpalm (Trachycarpus fortunei) is de meest winterharde palm ter wereld en kan in beschutte locaties in Vlaanderen buiten overwinteren. Deze Chinese palm wordt langzaam 8-12 meter hoog en heeft karakteristieke waaiervormige bladeren en een stam bedekt met bruine vezels van oude bladscheden.

De palm groeit zeer langzaam, maar ontwikkelt met de jaren een robuuste stam en grote, diep ingesneden waaierbladen. Oudere exemplaren kunnen gelige bloemen produceren, gevolgd door donkerblauwe bessen op vrouwelijke planten. Grote maagdenpalm is perfect voor tuinen waar exotische uitstraling met winterhardheid gecombineerd wordt.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Grote maagdenpalm doet het goed op zowat elke tuingrond, zolang de bodem maar niet te droog is. Hij groeit in de volle zon, halfschaduw en schaduw. In volle zon zal de bloei wel rijkelijker zijn.  
Plantdichtheid: 5 - 7 per m²

### Cultivars (Soorten)

*V. major 'Alba*' bloeit wit. *'Variegata*' is roomwit gevlekt en gerand, met blauwe bloemen.

### Onderhoud

Plant grote maagdenpalm in beschutte, zonnige locatie in goed doorlatende grond. Bescherm tegen koude noord- en oostenwinden.

Verwijder alleen volledig bruine bladeren - nooit gezonde groene bladeren wegknippen. Bescherm hart van palm in winter met vlies.

Water regelmatig eerste jaren voor vestiging. Eenmaal gevestigd zeer droogteverdragend en onderhoudsarm.

### Dit wist je nog niet:

Maagdenpalm is vernoemd naar de Maagdenbergen in China waar de soort ontdekt werd. Plant kan in optimale omstandigheden meer dan 100 jaar oud worden.

In China worden de vezels van de stam gebruikt voor touwen en borstels. Palm is symbool van standvastigheid en wordt vaak bij tempels geplant.
