Deze lage plant (10-15 cm hoog) vormt dichte tapijten via uitlopers en behoudt zijn glanzende groene bladeren het hele jaar door. De kleine gele bloemen lijken op aardbeibloemen, maar de plant produceert geen eetbare vruchten. Na een milde winter blijven de bladeren volledig groen, na strenge winters kunnen ze roodachtig verkleuren, maar sterven niet af. Goudaardbei is onmisbaar voor schaduwrijke plekken waar een onderhoudsvrije, wintergroene bodembedekker gewenst is. Voor een rijke bloei heeft hij wel enkele uren zon nodig. De bodem is best goed doorlaatbaar en niet te droog. Goudaardbei kan ook aangeplant worden in rotstuintjes en als onderbeplanting bij bomen. Plantdichtheid: 8 - 12 per m² ### Cultivars (Soorten) *W. ternata* wordt ongeveer 15 cm hoog met goudgele, boterbloemachtige bloemen van ruim 1 cm groot. Het is een prima bodembedekker en is bestand tegen zeewind; *W. geoides* heeft een grover blad en is de langstbloeiende soort, van april tot juni. In tegenstelling tot *W. ternata* maakt zij geen uitlopers. ### Onderhoud Plant goudaardbei in (half)schaduw tot diepe schaduw in vochtige, humusrijke grond. Plant verdraagt ook droge schaduw eens gevestigd. Geen regulier onderhoud nodig - plant zorgt zelf voor onkruidonderdrukking. Verwijder eventueel beschadigde bladeren in voorjaar. Verdeel grote matten om de 4-5 jaar voor verjonging. Water eerste jaar regelmatig voor snelle vestiging. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Goudaardbei is verwant aan echte aardbeien maar produceert geen eetbare vruchten. Plant is vernoemd naar botanicus Franz von Waldstein.
