Deze Zuid-Afrikaanse plant bloeit juli-september met grote, trechterovormige bloemen in bijna alle kleuren, van zuiver wit tot diep bordeauxrood, vaak met contrasterende kelen of randen. De bloemen openen geleidelijk van onder naar boven langs de steel, waardoor de bloeiperiode verlengd wordt tot 2-3 weken per steel. Gladiolen zijn uitstekende snijbloemen die tot 10 dagen goed houden en hele kamers kunnen domineren met hun statige uitstraling. Gladiool is onmisbaar voor snijtuinen en formele borders waar dramatische verticale accenten gewenst zijn. Ze hebben direct zonlicht nodig. Zorg voor beschutting tegen harde wind en ondersteun de lange stelen met plantenstokken of een gaasframe. Gladiolen kunnen worden geplant in tuinen, bloembedden, potten of containers. Houd een ruimte van 10 tot 15 centimeter tussen de bollen. Vergeet niet om de knollen uit te graven en te bewaren tijdens de winter in koudere klimaten. Geniet van de prachtige bloemen tijdens het groeiseizoen! ### Cultivars (Soorten) Er zijn verschillende soorten Gladiolen beschikbaar, zoals de populaire Gladiolus grandiflorus met grote bloemen in diverse kleuren. Gladiolus callianthus heeft witte bloemen met een donkerpaars of donkerrood hart en een heerlijke geur. Gladiolus nanus is een dwerggladiool met compacte bloemtrossen in verschillende kleuren. Gladiolus communis is een wilde gladiool met kleine bloemen in roze en paarse tinten. Gladiolus primulinus, ook wel butterfly gladiool genoemd, heeft kleinere bloemen die lijken op vlinders in geel, oranje, roze en rood. Kies de soort gladiool die bij jouw voorkeur past en geniet van hun pracht in de tuin of als snijbloem binnen. ### Onderhoud Plant gladiolen in volle zon in goed doorlatende, voedselrijke grond. Hoge variëteiten hebben steun nodig - plaats stokken bij het planten. Water regelmatig tijdens groei en bloei maar vermijd wateroverlast. Bemest maandelijks voor sterke stelen en rijke bloei. Graaf knollen uit na eerste vorst, droog en bewaar vorstvrij in droge turfmolm. Controleer regelmatig op rot tijdens bewaring. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Gladiool werd in Victoriaanse tijd symbool van kracht en morele integriteit. Namen betekent 'klein zwaard' naar de zwaardvormige bladeren. Moderne gladiolen zijn complexe hybriden die veel groter en kleurrijker zijn dan de oorspronkelijke wilde soorten.
