# Gewone smele

## Deschampsia cespitosa

Gewone smele (Deschampsia cespitosa) is een inheems siergras dat compacte pollen vormt van 40-80 cm hoog met elegante, luchtige bloempluimen die als goudgele wolken boven het gras zweven. Dit winterharde gras heeft smalle, donkergroene bladeren die het hele jaar structuur geven en spectaculaire bloempluimen die van juni tot september de tuin opfleuren.

De bloempluimen beginnen groenachtig en verkleuren naar goudgeel en uiteindelijk beige, waarbij ze tot diep in de winter decoratief blijven en beweging toevoegen aan de tuin. Het gras vormt stevige pollen die zich langzaam uitbreiden, maar nooit opdringerig worden. Gewone smele is essentieel voor natuurlijke tuinen en prairie-aanplantingen waar inheemse grassen de basis vormen.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Gewone smele is een stevig siergras en doet het goed op zowat elke tuingrond. De plant verdraagt natte en droge grond maar in droge periodes geef je best water bij aan de plantvoet. De bladeren van het siergras leiden het water weg van de wortelkluit.  
Plantdichtheid: 3 - 5 per m²

### Cultivars (Soorten)

*D. cespitosa 'Goldtau'* en *'Goldschleier'* zijn de meest gebruikte cultivars, met roodbruine bloemen die verkleuren naar goudgeel; *'Tardiflora'* heeft groene aren.

### Onderhoud

Plant gewone smele in volle zon tot halfschaduw in vochtige, humusrijke grond. Gras verdraagt verschillende grondsoorten maar groeit het weelderigst in voedselrijke omstandigheden.

Knip in maart oude bladeren en bloempluimen terug voor nieuwe groei. Verdeel grote pollen om de 4-5 jaar voor verjonging.

Water tijdens droge periodes voor optimale groei en bloei. In natuurlijke omstandigheden zorgt het gras grotendeels voor zichzelf.

Gewone smele speelt belangrijke rol in natuurlijke graslanden en biedt habitat voor talloze insecten. De zaden voeden verschillende vogelsoorten in winter.

Dit gras is indicator voor vochtige, voedselrijke gronden en komt van nature voor in vochtige weilanden en bosranden. Uitstekend voor het herstellen van natuurlijke vegetaties.
