# Gewone plataan

## Platanus × hispanica

Gewone plataan (Platanus × acerifolia) is een majestueuze stadsboom die kan uitgroeien tot imposante exemplaren van 25-35 meter hoog met brede, koepelvormige kroon en karakteristieke schors die in grote platen afbladdert. Deze hybride tussen Amerikaanse en oosterse plataan heeft grote, handvormige bladeren en hangende bolvormige vruchten.

De boom staat bekend om zijn tolerantie voor luchtvervuiling, verdichte grond en stedelijke omstandigheden, waardoor het de perfecte straatboom is. In herfst verkleuren de bladeren geel-bruin en de decoratieve vruchten blijven lang aan de boom hangen. Gewone plataan is de klassieke keuze voor grote tuinen, lanen en parkachtige settings waar een monumentale boom met stedelijke verdraagzaamheid gewenst is.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Alle grondsoorten. Verdraagt luchtvervuiling en zeewind. Let enkel op dat de bodem niet te vochtig is.

### Onderhoud

Plant gewone plataan in volle zon in diepe, vochtige grond. Boom verdraagt stedelijke omstandigheden, luchtvervuiling en periodieke droogte uitstekend.

Snoei jonge bomen voor goede kroonopbouw. Oudere platanen hebben nauwelijks snoei nodig behalve verwijdering van dode takken.

Geef voldoende ruimte bij plaatsing - deze boom heeft veel ruimte nodig. Water jonge exemplaren tijdens droge periodes voor goede vestiging.

### Dit wist je nog niet:

Plataan wordt wereldwijd gebruikt als stadsboom vanwege zijn tolerantie voor vervuiling en verdichte grond. Boom kan honderden jaren oud worden in stedelijke omgeving.

De afbladderende schors is een aanpassingsmechanisme om vervuiling af te werpen. Platanenhout wordt gebruikt voor meubels en heeft een mooie gevlamde tekening.
